To direct the district of Matara towards excellence through an efficient and effective service that brings satisfaction to the public.

         Our Mission

To create a public-friendly administrative mechanism and sustainable development in Matara district through strategic management of human, physical, and financial resources in accordance with government policies.

Matara historically belongs to the area called Ruhuna, one of the three kingdoms in Sri Lanka (Thun Sinhalaya). Ancient kings also build the temple in the middle of the town and now it is a very popular sacred place among the Buddhists in the area. In the 16th and 18th centuries, Matara was ruled by the Portuguese and Dutch respectively. The culture and architecture can be still seen in the area. The Dutch built the popular light house in Point Dondra and is considered one of the most beautiful and oldest lighthouse in Sri Lanka. The two fortresses built by the Portuguese and Dutch can be found inside the city of Matara. Other important works done by Dutch are the St. Marie's church and the marketplace in Nupe junction.
